Breaker trips or a hot outlet while charging: what's actually wrong?

Heat is the most common complaint. Owners charging on shared, low-amperage or borrowed circuits often found the plug too hot to hold, and several saw plugs and receptacles partly melt, including a budget 14-50 outlet that failed after years on a 40A line. Dropping the charge rate or avoiding extension cords helped some.

Tripping breakers showed up in other forms: brand-new dedicated circuits that cut out minutes or hours into a charge, even with different chargers, and a few cases where both Level 1 and Level 2 failed while DC fast charging worked. Owners using their EV as a power source also tripped breakers when a compressor's startup surge exceeded the limit.
