Why was my public charging bill so high?

Many owners found the final bill didn't match the price on the screen. Per-minute billing was the usual culprit: a car that pulls only about 50 kW can end up paying nearly a dollar per kWh, while one holding 150 kW may pay far less. Load sharing between stalls and session caps can also cut speeds below the label rating.

Others were caught off guard by how public prices compare with cheap home charging, or with gas. Prices at the same stations climbed noticeably within a year, and some road-trippers found a long fast-charging trip cost about the same as gas, or more. Tracking cost per kWh and checking your car's real charge speed helps explain the total.
