Charging is slow after 80% business card

dina_corvall
I'm putting this on business cards, with a QR code that links back to this post. I'll order from one of those "free card" sites, where shipping usually runs well under $10. I know the graph and data simplify things, and real numbers depend on the car and the charger. Still, my aim is to help people who may not realize they ought to unplug once they hit 80%. If some of them scan the code and end up in this sub-forum, that's a win in my book.

Other comments here point out that people are wary of QR codes from unknown sources. And whatever the length of the card, my advice is to make the pitch about the reader's own self-interest.

Okay, I'll concede the point on QR codes. The self-interest angle is harder to pull off here, though. Sure, charging etiquette makes things better for everybody when everyone follows it, but that's a matter of social conscience rather than self-interest. Once I'm actually plugged in, what serves me personally is taking as much charge as I think I'll need before I drive off. :-(

Unpopular opinion, but I don't worry about this much. Charge, and go when you're finished. The rules I do care about: don't leave a car plugged in when it isn't charging. Don't park in an EV spot if you don't need to charge, just because it's labeled for EVs. Don't occupy both chargers to get faster speeds. Don't ICE a charger when other spaces are available. Don't leave the cable lying on the ground. Don't damage the station. And be polite and reasonable. I honestly wish there were more good chargers around, and that people treated them with more respect.

True, newer vehicles don't slow down as drastically, but they still taper off once they pass 80%.

Leaving notes isn't something I'd necessarily do. If someone were just sitting there scrolling on their phone, I might politely talk to them face to face. But you made a convincing case, so I upvoted you, which is how a forum is supposed to work.

A note would be a bit annoying, sure. But a plain alert at 80% seems like a welcome reminder of where you stand and how much longer it'll take, even if you intend to go beyond that.

Honestly this is pretty silly. When I'm home, I charge at home. On long road trips, though, I want as few stops as I can get away with, so I fill up to 100%. Sticking to 80% just isn't workable until EVs can go 600+ miles on a charge, and I know a few can already, but I can't afford those.
