First real winter road trip coming up — what should I actually pack?

Planning a January road trip up through Alberta and getting a little nervous after reading about iced-over public chargers. Never dealt with real cold before (LA to Chicago move was already an adjustment). What adapters should I actually pack, and is there any campground charging etiquette I should know before I show up somewhere?

What portable charger model did you use, and which adapters actually worked in those campground outlets? A lot of supposedly 'universal' plug kits have cheap connections that get hot. Also, did you run into any campground rules about EV charging?

Agreed about cheap adapters—they can run hot, so I always double-check for heat after plugging in. Haven’t had campground staff say anything, but I only charge overnight and ask first if possible.

If you are using any homemade or non-listed adapters, that’s a violation under NEC 110.3(B) and 406.4(D). The plug connections should match the rating and listing of the device. You don’t want melted plugs or worse.

The worst adapter I bought looked sturdy but ran hot after ten minutes—campground 30A, so I kept checking it. Ended up swapping it for an old molded RV plug I found at a secondhand shop. Never got questioned at the campground but always asked first and pointed out I’d pay extra for the kilowatts.

I’ve found Maine campgrounds mostly okay with EV charging as long as you ask first and pay whatever extra they ask. Never had anyone say no, but I always try to be upfront about it.

What did you do when the charger was iced? Did you just wait it out? My charger is frozen right now and I don't know if I'm supposed to yank it or not.

Never yank a frozen connector. Brought mine inside once and let it thaw in a bucket—dry, not water—just ambient heat. The release finally clicked after an hour. Patience beats snap-frozen plastic every time.

If it’s frozen in, don’t yank—learned that the hard way my first year. I’ve had luck with wrapping the plug in a towel and pouring warm (not hot) water over it. Sometimes just waiting for a sunny hour helps. Have you tried warming your connector, or is it iced so badly it won’t budge at all?

So if my EV charger gets stuck in the cold—should I just leave it alone? In Arizona we never see iced-over plugs, so I have no clue what to do. Am I supposed to bring a hair dryer or just wait for the sun?

Yanked a frozen J1772 once—thought I'd just muscle it loose. Handle came free, plug didn’t. Left the tip in the car. Had to tow it to a shop, whole thing cost me two weekends and a new cable. I keep a jug of warm water handy now, but still flinch at the memory.

Never yank a frozen J1772—seen more than one cable left in the port that way. Warm air (not boiling water) helps, or just wait for sun if you can. Arizona folks: thaw first, force never. Anyone tried silicone spray to keep connectors free in winter?

Pulled plenty of frozen connectors off my garage wall in Vermont. Never force it—hair dryer, warm—not hot—water, or just wait for sunlight. Yanking breaks stuff. Anyone else try a silicone spray on the plug to stop sticking?

If your connector is iced in, don’t ever force it. Warm (not boiling) water or a hair dryer on low usually loosens things up—never pull hard or use a heat gun. For silicone spray, use only ones confirmed safe for plastics and test in a small spot. Anyone else logging which spray brands actually avoid gunk buildup?

Hair dryer on low (with an outdoor cord) is what finally saved my frozen connector after two hours of waiting last January. Warm water works, but never boiling. I check inside the holster for moisture on wet days too—prevents a lot of hassle.

Used dielectric-safe silicone spray on connectors for years in the trade, mostly on outdoor disconnects and meter bases, and it holds up fine on the housing and gasket — that's what it's made for. Where I'd be careful is the actual charge pins: don't spray directly into the face of the connector, just the boot and the seal where it meets the car. Done that way it doesn't gunk up or attract more grit than usual, and it does slow down ice actually bonding to the rubber. Doesn't stop freezing entirely if you're getting freezing rain directly on it, but it buys you time.

Pulled a frozen plug once thinking it’d just pop out—left the whole front end of the connector in the car. Two hours with a mechanic and a new cable later, I learned my lesson. If it’s iced tight, wait or gently warm it up—no yanking.

You don't need a hair dryer unless it's really stubborn. Usually IP66 covers this — wait for the sun, or pour a little warm (not hot) water on it.

TT-30 and 14-50 cover roughly 90% of campgrounds on a typical winter route, but it's worth carrying a 5-15 adapter for the rare places that only have a regular household plug near the office. On etiquette: always ask at the office first even if the outlet looks unclaimed, offer to pay the metered rate they usually already have posted for RVs, and never assume an empty spot next to an RV hookup is fair game just because no one's using it right now. The most common complaint from other campers is leaving a car plugged in and parked for hours after it's full when someone else is waiting. Iced-over chargers are their own issue — don't force it, that's how a connector tip gets damaged.

Just did almost this exact trip — Zeekr X through Alberta in January, portable charger saved me when the public chargers were iced solid. Packed a TT-30 and 14-50 adapter, covered basically every campground I hit. On etiquette: always ask at the office first even if the spot looks open, and expect to pay whatever metered rate they've already got posted.
