Going on a roadtrip, came up with a DIY adapter solution in order to only carry around a single extension cord for all outlet types.

rmahler_19
Hello all, I've been reading older threads here where people are strongly discouraged from running extension cords on 240V outlets for regular charging, and I completely understand why. I'm in a spot where I may have to do it, but only a few times, so I'd like to hear whether it can be done safely. Context: we're taking our Ioniq 9 (NACS port) on a road trip that ends at a fairly remote island with little to no charging infrastructure nearby. We'll charge fully before the final leg, but that leg is still several hours of highway driving. The house we're staying at has no dedicated charging equipment. It does have a dryer in a basement room (a beach house laundry room) close to where we'd park. So the plan would be to use the dryer outlet with a short extension cord to cover the distance, probably 15-20 feet. We'd only need to charge once or twice during the whole stay, just enough to easily make it to Level 3 charging on the way back. We have the Ampure 2 portable charger that came with the car. I've also been reading a thread where someone built a single-cord setup with adapters for different outlet types (10-30, 14-30 and so on), and it got me thinking about the same questions for my situation: what the right cord gauge and rating is for a run that short, and what amperage I should set the car to. With all that in mind: 1. Is it possible to do this safely for a couple of charging sessions? 2. What equipment would you recommend for the cord and any adapter between the dryer outlet and the Ampure 2? 3. Should I limit the current in the car, and by how much? 4. Is there anything I should check at the outlet itself, like whether it's a 10-30 or 14-30, the condition of the receptacle, or how warm things get, before and during charging? Thanks in advance. I'd rather ask now than improvise once we're out there.

Similar picky behavior here, but car-dependent. I have a cheap L1 charger that works fine with my wife's ID.4, but it never would start charging my EV6. I tried all 3 current settings (Max/Reduced/Minimum) and nothing changed. So I'd guess it's some handshake or ground check between that cord and that car, not necessarily your outlet. I ended up relying on my L2 charger instead.

That might be my issue too. I bought a no-name 16A level 1 charger for my Lightning while I wait on Sunrun, and it keeps tripping the GFCI in my garage. I'll try a name brand one before I blame the outlets.

Same kind of thing happened to me, but with the outlet instead of the charger. I bought a 25 ft 10 gauge cord for my 2021 Model Y's L1 charger. It's fine plugged straight into the wall. Through the cord it starts charging okay, then the outlet loses power, and that outlet stays dead for a while afterward. Gauge doesn't seem to be my issue, so I'm wondering if it's the outlet or the cord. Did your Polestar do it right away or after a bit?

Same kind of thing with my Volt at work. Stock L1 EVSE plus a 20-25 ft extension cord on a 20A circuit. I'd been running 8A and bumped it to 12A, then got a notification that charging stopped due to an interruption. Went out and the extension cable was warm, not hot. Not sure the cord was the cause, but it made me wonder if mine can really handle 12A. Now I'm looking for a heavier one.

Mine was a cord thing too. I top off off an outlet through an extension cord since I don't drive much, and it kept throwing "Connected without power" with the light flipping red and white. Swapped to a new 12 gauge cord and it's been fine since. Warm cord at 12A makes me think yours might be on the light side.

Mine stops too, but I don't think it's the cord. I'm on L1 with an EVDANCE unit and a schedule to dodge the 1pm-7pm peak rates. The app says charging "completed" at 1p, and after that it won't start again at 7p. Start/stop in the app just gives "action cannot be completed." The only thing that's worked is physically unplugging and replugging, and then it goes back to "charging scheduled." Did your Volt resume on its own after the interruption, or did you have to unplug it too?

Can't speak to long-term battery health, I've only had my ID.4 for two weeks. On the L1 part though, 15-20 km a day is tiny, so I'd expect a regular 15A outlet to keep up fine. We drive about as little and L1 covers it almost every time. I run a 75 ft 30-amp extension cord out to my parking pad and haven't needed anything faster. Public charging near me was $0.63/kWh, way above what I expected, so slow overnight at home suits me.

Same condo/renter boat here, kind of. I rent a detached house in BC and have been on a plain L1 charger, no extension cord, and I pay the power bill. Today the landlord asked me to stop, saying they're worried about the electrical setup and that their insurance company is supposed to be notified. I figured it's no different from running a fridge or a toaster, but apparently not to them. Has anyone had a landlord push back like this over just a regular outlet? Did you need their okay in writing?

Mine's an Ioniq 5 on the stock L1 box and I've had it cut out on me with a heavy cord too. Mine did it in direct sun, even with temps only in the low 70s. Put the box in the shade and it was fine. Has your 100' run got the box sitting out in the sun at all?

I'm in a similar spot with my Bolt EUV. The stock cord is a foot or two too short to reach over the gate to where the 240 outlet is going, so right now I'm on L1 with an extension cord while I wait on Qmerit. It's been fine so far, but I'm only doing it as a stopgap. Moving the outlet is probably the cleaner fix, like you're planning.

Careful with the stopgap thing. The day after I got my new EV I ran the L1 charger through an extension cord because the charger wouldn't reach the outlet. Within 5 minutes the app said charging was unsuccessful, the dash had a red warning, and the car wouldn't start. It got towed and the dealer says it isn't a simple reset. The charger was on one half of a two-plug outlet and the garage door opener was on the other half and was fine. I don't know that the cord did it, but I'd be curious whether anyone else has had a fresh-out-of-the-box car do that on a cord.

This happened to me with my Model 3. I was at my parents' for a couple days and had the charging cable plugged into a regular extension cord. When I went to leave, the two plugs wouldn't come apart. I spent about an hour pulling at them before I figured out they'd actually melted together. The car was in a heated garage, so it wasn't a cold thing. I'm now shopping for a cord that can handle charging.

Ha, the cord being the culprit tracks with mine. New Ioniq, generic cable off the internet. Sat overnight at 72% when it should've gone to 80%, then threw a check cable alert. The listing's amp rating seems to have gone down since I bought it, so I'm guessing it's the cable. Going to return it and try a name brand one.
steve_ouellette
@steve_ouelletteNovember 02, 2026
Good to know the generic cable might be the problem. My L1 cord just failed and I'm trying to work out whether I actually need the VW-branded replacement or if a generic one is basically the same. Did you notice any difference once you switched to a name brand?

This is basically my situation with the Lightning. The 110 plug I was using at the front of the duplex died, and the only other outlet is about 50 ft away. Was going to try a 10 gauge cord rated for 15A, so good to hear 12 gauge is the floor for 12A. Landlord controls the outlets and hasn't answered about a 220 install yet.

Under 10 miles a day is nothing for L1, I'd think. I'm a month in on a regular 15A outlet, the car pulls 12A, and even my ~100 miles a week has been no problem. My only worry is winter here near Philly, since I keep hearing sub-freezing L1 mostly goes to warming the battery.

Mine does the white blink too, but I haven't gotten as far as a red light. My 2021 ID.4 blinks white a few times and then just shuts off. Bought a $100 Amazon L1 charger, returned it, and the replacement did the same thing. Did the dealer charge you to look at the cable, or was that part of a regular visit?

@dnovotnyNovember 02, 2026
Your Blazer numbers line up with what I saw on my EV6. I was L1-only for a few months waiting on the L2 install, and it came out to about 4 miles an hour. Plugging in around 5:30-7 pm and leaving it till 7:30 am got me 45-50 miles a night. Those hours were the limit, not the outlet. So a week of heavy driving ending at 20% doesn't surprise me at all.

Reading all the cord talk, I'm wondering if mine is something else. L1 trickle at home was fine on my P2, but on the new P4 it starts and stops constantly and the app says it's done every time I open it, even though it's still charging. Dropping the amps to 10 didn't change anything. Anyone seen the "done but still charging" thing?

Mine's a 2023 ID.4 on a Tesla L1 cord with a Teslatap adapter, run through a heavy duty extension cord. My spouse plugged in and the VW app said "no incoming power has been detected." I tried three different outlets and got the same thing each time, so it doesn't look like the outlet. The cord or the adapter chain seems more likely to me. I haven't pulled the extension out of the chain yet to see if that changes anything.

Ours was kind of the opposite. R1S on a regular outlet for two months, about 2.2 mi/hr, so 20-25 miles a night. My commute is only 13 round trip so the miles were never the issue, and I hit a Supercharger maybe once to top off. What got old was doing the plug-in math every single day. L2 fixed that part for sure.

If you're hauling one cord around, length is the thing I'd think about first. The outdoor 5-20 outlet at the campground cabin I stayed in was barely reachable with my portable charger's own cable, so I'm now looking at carrying a cord too. For 12A, 12 gauge is fine for a short-to-medium run. I'd only go 10 if you expect to need 50 ft or more. Otherwise it's just extra weight.
mrenfro_44
@mrenfro_44November 02, 2026
Yeah I went 10 gauge for my 14-50 to 14-50 cord and it's about 20 lbs for 30ft, which is a lot to haul around. But I want it to handle the dryer outlets at 24A with my own adapters on the end, so I just carry the one. Is your 5-20 cabin outlet something you'd see often?

Not a 6-20 person, but this is making me wonder about my own outlet. I'm buying a used Mach-E soon and a Level 2 quote came back at $7,500 because they'd have to trench through the yard, so I'm probably stuck on a regular garage outlet. House is from 2008. Is there anything I should look at on the outlet before leaving it plugged in overnight?

@rgrimsley_November 02, 2026
I'm in a 1976 house and don't know if the wiring is original, so your outlet question is mine too. I swapped the outlet for a new one a few years back, and that's the only thing I've done. I ran the ID.4 on the stock cord for 5 hour stretches a few times and nothing happened. Then I left it overnight and lay awake most of the night picturing a fire. Nothing was wrong in the morning, but I still don't really know what I'm trusting.

I'd skip 16 gauge for that. My spot is about 35 ft from the house, so I ordered a 25ft 12ga cord to cover the gap past the charger's own cable. Car isn't here yet so I haven't run it, but 16ga seemed too thin for hours of continuous draw.

30-40 miles overnight is way more than I'd need. My house is older with a 100 amp panel, so L1 is all I can do at home right now. I work from home and usually drive under 10 miles a day, so I'm hoping plain L1 covers it until we move and I can put in a Level 2.

Funny, the 6-20 is the one I actually have, in my townhouse. Not a motel AC. Everything I've found that plugs straight into it is either an uncertified no-name on Amazon or a used L1/L2 unit on Marketplace, so I'm not sure what to buy. Has anyone actually seen a decent charger that comes with a 6-20 plug?
