Six months in -- here's how long charging actually takes at my house

Every calculator online was technically right and practically useless. Here's what I actually see: - Overnight on 240V at home: full from ~30%, no exceptions, always ready by 6am. - Wall outlet at my in-laws' place: not full. But enough to get home + a buffer. - DC fast on a road trip: coffee break. Sometimes two if my kid needs a bathroom. Nobody told me the real answer, which is "the question doesn't matter once you have a home setup." The only time I look at charging speed is on road trips, and even then only for the first 20 minutes while I figure out if we're stopping for a meal or just gas-station stretching. What's your real-world number? Curious how much the "3 hours to full" or "45 min to 80%" stats hold up once someone has actually lived with the car.

The 45 min to 80% number depends on the car and on where you start. I try to show up at Superchargers around 5%, so I'm in the fast part of the curve and I'm usually done before I've finished whatever I stopped for. I drove a Niro/Kona class car for a month and a weekend getaway turned into a 3-hour session. Different world.

12A on 120V in my Bolt EUV for a couple years now. Ready by morning on normal days. Summer trip to my mom's I don't fast charge at all, winter I have to stop once.

I'd push back on the "first 20 minutes" part. I had a Bolt EUV before the Ioniq 6, and the 56kW charging added 2.5+ hours to a 350 mile trip. That I noticed. With the Ioniq it's 25-30 minutes every couple of hours and I don't think about it. If you're still deciding on L2, try L1 for a while first. My 14-50 install was $3600 because of the basement rewiring.

@rgalloway $3600, ouch. Ours was a lot less, the panel is right in the garage. And fair point on the Bolt, I've only had the one car so I've got nothing to compare it to.

Leaf SV Plus here so I'm on the slow end. 14-50 at 6.6 kW, so overnight is never an issue. On my NY to OH trips I use the CCS to CHAdeMO adapter and the gaps are usually around 164 miles. 80% takes 30 to 40 minutes depending on the charger.

Agree that home charging is the whole thing, but I'd say the road number matters less than whether the network works. Superchargers first, then Buc-ee's and Pilot/Flying J. A fast car on a flaky charger is worse than a slower car on a reliable one. Mine's hardwired at 11.5 kW these days since my wife's Mach-E shares the circuit, and neither car is ever not full.

@ray_hutchins hardwired is the right call. I paid $750 for a 50 foot run and the quotes were double when I said it was for an EV vs a welder, for the same outlet.

Daily commute on the L1 cord that came with the car. Roughly 4 miles of range an hour adds up overnight more than I expected. Only thing is the plug worked itself loose on me once, so I check it's seated now.

I never actually see full on my Leaf. 65% covers my 44 mile commute, so the hours-to-full number only matters if you start from empty.

Worst wait I've had at EA is about 20 minutes. Usually I'm eating somewhere anyway so I don't watch the clock.
