What actually goes into picking an EV charger for home -- what do people wish they'd known first?

About to pick a charger for home and realizing there's way more to it than I expected -- amperage, whether it needs to be hardwired, smart features, cable length, all of it. For people who've already gone through this, what's the thing you wish you'd actually known or asked about before buying, instead of finding out after install?

Don't lead with "it's for an EV charger" when you call electricians. Labor cost magically doubles. I had a 14-50 put in on 200A service for about $85 because I bought the outlet and breaker myself and just told him where I wanted it
