What does 'bad battery health' on a used EV actually mean in practice?

Looking at a used EV and everyone keeps telling me to check "battery health" before buying but nobody explains what that actually means in practice. Does bad battery health mean it just won't hold a charge as long, or does it actually stop working at some point? And how would I even get one of these reports if the dealer doesn't offer it upfront?

Bought used on purpose after watching new EV prices swing so much the last few years, and it worked out, but I got lucky on one thing I didn't fully understand going in: not every used listing already has a battery health report attached, sometimes you have to specifically push the seller for one. Without it you're basically guessing whether 'drives fine' means anything. Worth asking for it directly rather than assuming it'll just be offered.

Recurrent is the one I see cited most for third-party reports, some manufacturers also have an in-app battery health check you can pull up yourself if you can get into the car before buying. Worth asking the seller to just show you the app screen.

New vs used for me came down to something dumber than battery health: I wanted the tax situation to be simple and not have to think about whoever owned it before me. That's it. Not everyone needs a spreadsheet for this decision.

That's a completely valid reason. I just wish I'd known to ask about the report instead of assuming 'drives fine' meant anything, since it very much doesn't have to.

Degradation is gradual, not a cliff — a pack at 85% of original capacity still works completely normally, it just has 15% less usable range than day one. It won't suddenly stop; you'd just notice your normal routes eating more percentage than they used to.

Gradual is right but I'd push back on 'works completely normally' — logged mine from new, and DC fast charge speed started tapering noticeably before the displayed capacity number moved at all. Capacity percentage lags behind what you'd actually notice on a road trip. Ask for charge-curve history too, not just the one capacity number.

One useful thing from my own search: lease returns are a sweet spot people don't talk about enough. Usually well-maintained, known service history, priced better than private used listings.

Lease return I bought had full service records and the battery warranty was still fully intact and transferred with zero paperwork hassle, which is the part that actually saved me money versus a private listing where I'd have had to chase the seller for both things separately.

Varies by model more than people want to admit, but the general post-price-crash years get mentioned a lot for a reason — just don't skip the report because the year looks right on paper.

Nobody answered you directly so: post-price-crash years get mentioned a lot for a reason, but I'd care more about whether the report shows a steady degradation curve versus one big drop, which can happen with cars that sat at 100% charge in storage for months. The model year on the title is a proxy, not the thing you're actually checking for.
