What should I actually check on an EV test drive beyond how it feels to drive?

Test-driving this weekend and trying to build a checklist that isn't just "how does it feel to drive," since apparently that's the easy part. Moving from Phoenix to Denver so cold-weather behavior actually matters to me in a way it wouldn't have a year ago. What should I actually be checking on the lot that I wouldn't think to ask about?

Is there an actual temperature below which it's worth asking the dealer to demo the heater/defrost performance, or does it not really show up until it's genuinely freezing out?

Hard to fully test cold-weather behavior on a normal test drive since dealer lots don't exactly hand you a car pre-soaked at -15°C, but you can still check a few things: ask specifically how the car handles preconditioning (can you schedule cabin warmup from the app while still plugged in — that's the feature that actually matters once winter hits), and ask the salesperson to be straight about the manufacturer's stated cold-weather range derating rather than just quoting the EPA number.

Also worth actually testing the heated seats/steering wheel controls on the drive itself — cheap-feeling controls for those are a bigger annoyance than people expect once you're actually using them daily in real cold, versus a gas car where you just crank the dial.

Before I'd rely on that scheduled preconditioning feature — does running the cabin warmup from the app while the car's unplugged pull from the 12V battery, or does it only work while it's still plugged in? Asking because I'd hate to get in the habit of scheduling it and then find out it's draining something it shouldn't on a cold morning.

It draws from the traction battery, not the 12V. The 12V system only handles the low-draw stuff — waking the car up, closing the contactors — once that happens, the actual heating/AC load runs off the main pack the same as it would while you're driving, whether you're plugged in or not. Difference is just where that energy comes from: plugged in, it's pulling from the wall and topping the pack back up as it goes; unplugged, it's coming straight out of your range for the day. Good to know before your first scheduled morning warmup eats more of your charge than you expected, but it's not going to strand your 12V battery.

Test the regen braking specifically in stop-and-go, not just open road. Feels completely different in traffic than on the test-drive loop the dealer usually sends you on.

Ask if the charge port location works with your garage/driveway layout! Sounds minor but I almost didn't think about it and it would've been a real headache with my parking situation.

is there a way to test how loud road noise is or does that only show up after you've had it a while

You can actually test this on the drive — EVs have no engine noise masking road/tire noise, so take the dealer's test route onto the highway specifically, not just surface streets, and pay attention. It's noticeably more apparent at speed than around a parking lot.

Interior storage vs whatever gas car you're coming from is worth actually checking with your own stuff in hand, not just eyeballing it. Frunk/trunk shapes are weirder than they look in photos.

Nobody mentions this but bring your actual car seats to the test drive. Latch anchor placement is wildly different car to car and the salesperson will not think to point it out. Found out the hard way that a car we liked had anchors buried so deep behind the seat cushion my husband couldn't get a wrench in there.

Went and did the test drive this weekend. Tried the regen-in-stop-and-go thing like orangepluto suggested and it really was a different feel than the open-road loop they sent me on. Also asked about the cold-weather derating number specifically like Erik said to — salesperson genuinely didn't know it off the top of his head and had to go ask someone in back. Made me trust the answer less, honestly.
