House was built in 1968, and the dryer outlet in the basement laundry room is the old 3-prong kind. Looked it up and it's a NEMA 10-30, not the newer 4-prong style. We switched to a stacked heat pump washer/dryer in a main-floor closet a couple years back, so this old 30A outlet has just been sitting there unused since. Picked up my first EV last month, a base Ioniq 5, and before spending real money running a new circuit out to the garage I want to know if I can just get a 10-30 adapter and plug into what's already there.
I've seen a couple of comments online saying Tesla and a few other brands actually sell a 10-30 adapter for their mobile connectors, so it's clearly a known thing people do. What I can't tell is whether it's actually a good idea long-term or just a stopgap people end up regretting. The outlet itself still tests fine on a multimeter, and the breaker hasn't tripped in the years since the old dryer came out. On a fixed income the difference between plugging into what I already have and a $1,500+ new circuit is not nothing, so I'd like to actually understand the tradeoff before deciding either way.
