Is a regular NEMA 5-15 household outlet actually viable for EV charging or just an emergency backup?

Everything I charge with came with a standard household NEMA 5-15 plug and I'm trying to figure out if that's actually a legitimate way to charge long-term or just something you're supposed to upgrade away from immediately. Anyone actually relying on a regular wall outlet for real, ongoing charging, or is it mostly treated as a backup-only thing?

Depends how many miles you do a day. Under 40 or so and it's fine.

For us it was always the backup. On the R1S, 120V gets you something like 3 miles an hour of charging. I do a lot of 5-10 hour drives to see the kids at school, and coming home on that would take days to recover from. I've always said home L2 is a necessity, not an option. Smaller car and short commute, sure, people do make it work.
