Picked up my 2026 Model Y from the San Jose delivery center last week, first EV for me, wife's had a Leaf for years so I'm not totally new to this world but the Tesla side is different. Sales guy at delivery basically waved off any questions about non-Tesla charging and said "you'll basically live on Superchargers, don't worry about the rest." Fine, I get why he says that, but my apartment complex doesn't have anything and when I pulled up PlugShare for a five mile radius around me I'm seeing something like three times as many J1772 Level 2 spots as Tesla ones, mostly at grocery stores and a rec center down the road.
So before I just trust the sales pitch, I want to know if people are actually keeping a J1772 adapter in the frunk day to day or if that's a "just in case, never touched it" item. And if it is worth having, which one is actually worth the roughly $50 people seem to pay, versus which ones are garbage that crack or don't lock in right. Not trying to buy three different adapters to find out the hard way.
