Getting the panel work done regardless — main panel's maxed out and a subpanel's happening either way for other stuff in the garage, not just the car. Electrician priced the subpanel plus a NEMA 14-50 for the EV. That part I understand.
What I don't get is whether I'm also supposed to be pricing in a wall-mounted charger after that, or if the 14-50 with a portable cord is the whole answer. Everyone selling chargers acts like the receptacle is step one and the box on the wall is step two. Nobody selling receptacles agrees with that.
Backstory: this is EV number two, third year of doing this outdoors, and I've already broken enough gear that I'd rather ask first than find out the expensive way. Cracked a cheap holster mount last year, yanked the connector out of it, watched it swing, figured that's probably not great for the pins either.
So — subpanel and 14-50 in hand. Do I actually need a hardwired unit too, or is that a separate purchase for a separate reason?
