Ioniq 5 shows up in three weeks and I'm finally scheduling the electrical work for my Boston condo's parking spot (I have a dedicated garage stall, thankfully). Got two quotes. First electrician spec'd a NEMA 14-50 without blinking — said it's what everyone asks for. Second one looked at the run (about 35 feet from the panel) and said since I'm only ever going to plug an EVSE into this, he could do a 6-50 instead and skip pulling the neutral conductor, save me a bit on wire.
I made a spreadsheet (obviously) comparing the two and on paper they look identical for my purposes — both 240V/50A, both handle any Level 2 charger I've looked at. The only difference I can find is the neutral pin and whatever savings come from not running it.
Before I tell him to go with the cheaper option: is there a real reason to still want the neutral on an EV-only circuit, or is that just leftover thinking from when 14-50 was the "safe default" answer? Also curious if this bites me later if I ever sell the condo or swap the car — trying to think two owners ahead here, not just my Ioniq 5.
