What's actually possible for EV charging if you rent and can't do a permanent install?

Trying to understand what options renters actually have for charging, beyond just 'ask your landlord.' For anyone who's gone through this -- did you end up with something installed, or did you rely on portable/public charging instead, and what actually worked when you brought it up with a landlord?

Where you live matters a lot. In California a landlord can't just refuse if you put the request in writing and pay for it yourself. There are exceptions: rent controlled units, buildings with fewer than 5 spaces, and places where parking isn't part of your lease. Outside of CA it mostly comes down to whether they think chargers will help them rent units.
