What's the real deal with charging off a NEMA 14-50 outlet -- safe, fast enough, worth it?

Keep seeing NEMA 14-50 mentioned as basically the standard way to charge off a 240V outlet, but trying to actually understand what it means in practice -- how fast it really charges, whether there are safety things to watch for with the plug heating up over time, and whether it's considered real Level 2 speed or something in between. For anyone charging off one daily, what's your actual day-to-day experience been?

Hardwire it if you can. Outlets with a charger hanging off them for hours every night are where the fires come from.

It's Level 2, not something in between. The Tesla Mobile Connector pulls 32A on a 14-50 by default, about 7.7kW. My Model Y has been on one for 4.5 years and 100,000 miles, and it's always done by morning even after my 100 mile round trip in winter. The only time I've ever wished for more was coming home nearly empty and needing to go back out that evening. That's happened maybe twice.

Hardwiring doesn't fix a bad install. A lug that wasn't torqued inside an EVSE heats up the same way a loose receptacle terminal does. You just don't see it. I have a Hubbell 14-50R about a foot from my panel. No heat issues.
