Would a single NEMA 6-20 240V 20A outlet actually be enough to charge my EV, or am I undersizing this?

I don't have room in the budget right now for a full Level 2 setup, so I was thinking about just having an electrician put in a 240V 20A NEMA 6-20 outlet on my patio and using a portable EVSE that can plug into it. I know it'll charge slower than a real 40-50A circuit but my daily commute isn't huge. Is this actually a reasonable stopgap or is 20A just going to be so slow it's not worth the trouble? Also wondering if going smaller now means I'm stuck rewiring later if I ever want to upgrade.

It is a reasonable stopgap. A 20 amp breaker means 16 amps continuous for the EVSE, so at 240 volts you are getting roughly 3.8 kW. Depending on the car that is maybe 12 to 15 miles of range per hour plugged in. If you plug in at 9 or 10 at night and leave at 7, that is a lot more than most people drive in a day. My Leaf charges at 6.6 kW on a 14-50 and most nights it is finished hours before I get up, so half that speed would still do the job for me during the week. Road trip weeks would be tighter, but that is what DC fast chargers are for.
