Charger install is 200 feet from my panel because the garage is detached, and now I'm worried about voltage drop killing the charging speed

Electrician says running the wire out to my detached garage 200 feet away is doable but he wants to size the wire up significantly to deal with voltage drop over that distance, which is adding a lot more to the quote than I expected. I don't really understand how much of a real-world difference this makes versus just being an extra precaution electricians take. Would a run this long on undersized wire actually meaningfully slow down charging, or create any kind of safety issue, or is this mostly a cover-your-bases upcharge? Trying to figure out if it's worth paying for the properly sized wire or if a cheaper gauge would still work fine in practice.

I was in pretty much the same spot. Very long external run and the quote with the upsized wire was way over what I wanted to spend, so I just had them put in a 30a circuit instead of a 50 or 60. Thinner wire, much cheaper, and honestly it's still way more than I need overnight. Ask him to price out a smaller circuit before you start trying to cheap out on the wire for the big one
