Picked up my first EV two weeks ago (a used Bolt, new to me) and I'm now the proud owner of a driveway extension cord setup that is very obviously not going to cut it long term. House is a 1970s split-level in upstate NY, garage is detached about 40 feet from the panel. I have genuinely no idea where to start with this.
I called two electricians so far just to get a read on what they'd even be looking at, and both asked me things I couldn't answer off the top of my head - what size is my main panel, how much room is left on it, is there existing 240V anywhere on that side of the house. I dug around and found a sticker inside the panel door that says 100A, which from what I've read online is on the smaller side for a house that also has central air and an electric water heater.
So before I go further I want to actually understand what I'm deciding between. Do I need to upgrade to a bigger panel or can 100A actually work with the right circuit? Is hardwiring actually meaningfully better than a plug-in unit, or is that mostly a preference thing? And realistically, is this a DIY-adjacent project for someone reasonably handy, or is this 100% licensed-electrician territory no matter what? Trying to get a sense of what I'm actually paying for before either of these guys quotes me a number and I have nothing to compare it to.
