Detached garage is 180ft from my panel -- is running a dedicated EV circuit out there actually realistic or am I looking at a trenching nightmare?

House panel is in the basement and the detached garage where I'd actually want to charge is about 180ft away across the backyard. There's no existing conduit between the two that I know of. I've gotten one quote so far that casually mentioned trenching the whole run, which sounds like it could turn into a much bigger project than just 'install a charger.' Before I get more quotes, I'm trying to understand what I'm actually dealing with here -- is 180ft a normal distance for this kind of install, or does it start pushing into needing a sub panel out at the garage instead of just running a long circuit? And roughly what ballpark should I expect once trenching that distance is involved, versus if there's some way to avoid digging up the yard entirely?

180ft is not unusual for a detached garage, it's just expensive. At that distance voltage drop starts to matter, so for a 40A or 48A charger circuit the electrician will likely upsize the conductors -- probably aluminum to keep the cost sane. Copper at that length gets painful fast. Honestly at 180ft I'd run a feeder to a small sub panel rather than a single EV circuit. The cost of the trench is the same either way, and the wire size difference between a 60A feeder and a 50A circuit isn't huge. Then you have lights, outlets and maybe a second charger later without digging again. Before any of that though, get a load calculation done on your main panel. If you're on 100A service like me, that may decide things for you.

trenching cost depends a lot on what's in the way. open lawn with a rented trencher is a weekend, going under a patio or around a sprinkler system is where it gets ugly. code depth for PVC conduit is usually 18" for this kind of feeder, direct burial UF can be 24". I'd ask the quotes to break out trench vs wire vs panel work separately so you can actually compare them. some guys pad the trench line a lot!

Agree with getting the trench, wire and panel costs as separate lines. Labor is most of the cost on a job like this, not materials.
